Ron Rosenbaum: Isn't it obvious by now what this is about? Our need to prove that Hitler was not "normal," thus not like us, normal human nature thereby exculpated from producing a Hitler. It fills a need to reassure ourselves there is no Hitler potential in human potential. We're off the hook.
Ron is right. Unfortunately, without constant vigilance, we are all sucseptible to the lure of one collectivist ideology or another, and this is true regardless of whether we have one testicle, two or none. The only difference between such ideologies is in how they define the collective, and the means by which they seek to enforce it. Today's "politically correct" collectivist movements use the machinations of democracy to restrict individual liberty, while less favored ones, such as Hitler's, employed more forceful means. Either way though, it is liberty that suffers anytime the state acts in support of a collectivist agenda.
